How do I get cited by ChatGPT?
First, check you are not blocked
A surprising share of sites that cannot be cited by ChatGPT are blocking it, usually without anyone having decided to. CDN security products commonly ship AI-crawler blocking enabled by default, and managed rule sets add user agents over time without notification.
The user agents that matter for OpenAI are GPTBot, which gathers content for training; OAI-SearchBot, which powers ChatGPT search; and ChatGPT-User, which fetches pages when a user's prompt triggers live browsing. Blocking GPTBot alone removes you from training data while leaving live retrieval intact — a legitimate choice for some publishers, but rarely what a service business intends.
Check your robots.txt, then check your CDN's bot management settings separately, because the CDN can block a crawler that robots.txt explicitly welcomes.
Second, make sure your content exists without JavaScript
Many modern sites render content client-side, meaning the initial HTML response is an empty shell and text only appears after JavaScript runs. Search crawlers have partially adapted to this; AI crawlers are considerably less forgiving.
The test is simple and worth running before anything else: fetch your page with curl, or disable JavaScript in your browser, and see whether your content is there. If it is not, no amount of content strategy will help until the delivery layer is fixed.
Third, write in the formats that get cited
Analysis of 2.6 billion AI citations found that comparative and list-format content accounts for 25.4% of all citations, while homepages account for 3.3%. Most organizations invest disproportionately in the page that earns the least.
The formats that earn citations are unglamorous: direct comparisons between named options, honest alternatives pages, specific how-to content, and question-and-answer pages addressing one question each. Within each page, the structural pattern matters — a heading phrased as the question, a direct answer within the first fifty words, then depth.
Controlled experiments at Princeton found that adding quotations, statistics, and source citations to otherwise identical content improved visibility in generative engines by up to 40%. Models prefer content that shows its work, which is a reasonable proxy for reliability.
URL structure carries measurable weight too: slugs of four to seven natural-language words correlate with 11.4% more citations than terse or parameterized alternatives.
Fourth, be corroborated elsewhere
This is the step most guides omit, and it is the one that separates brands that get named from brands that merely have well-structured sites.
ChatGPT's retrieval mix has shifted substantially — Profound measured its index alignment with Google rising from 12% to 33% between April and July 2025 while alignment with Bing fell from 26% to 8%. What stayed constant is that community and editorial sources carry disproportionate weight in recommendation-style answers.
Practically, that means presence on Reddit and relevant forums, industry press coverage, inclusion in expert roundups and comparison articles published by others, podcast and conference appearances, YouTube, and credible directories. You cannot mark up your way into being recommended; you have to be discussed.
Then measure, because it will change
Between 40% and 60% of AI citations change monthly. A citation earned in March may be gone in May without anything on your site changing, because a competitor published something better or the retrieval mix shifted.
Keep a fixed prompt set and re-run it monthly. Fixed is the important word: if the prompts change, you cannot distinguish your own progress from model drift.
How long does it take to get cited by ChatGPT?
Live retrieval can surface new content within days once crawler access and structure are correct. Consistent citation across a prompt set typically takes three to four months, because it depends on corroboration accumulating across third-party sources rather than on-site changes alone.
Does ChatGPT use Google's index?
Partially, and the mix changes. Profound measured ChatGPT's index alignment with Google rising from 12% to 33% between April and July 2025, while alignment with Bing fell from 26% to 8%. ChatGPT also uses its own crawling and retrieval infrastructure, so it should not be treated as a proxy for any single search index.
Should I block GPTBot to protect my content?
For most service businesses, no. Blocking GPTBot removes your content from training data, which reduces the likelihood models know your brand exists. Publishers licensing content commercially have a genuine reason to be selective. Businesses that want to be recommended generally should not block the systems doing the recommending.
