The bigger change

2024: Win the Search. 2026: Win the Answer.

The Shift tracks the evidence. The Search Landscape explains the commercial path it points to: Reach, Read, Cite, Recommend, and Act.

01The shift

Buyers no longer start with ten blue links.

They ask an engine, and the engine answers with a shortlist. Either a company is in that answer or a competitor is. The 13 figures below are why, and each one states its publisher and its date so it can be checked rather than taken on faith.

51%

of surveyed B2B software buyers start research with an AI chatbot more often than with Google, up from 36% seven months earlier.

G22026Vendor

How this can be misread: This applies to G2’s surveyed B2B software-buying population, not all industries or all buyers.

69%

of surveyed software buyers said information surfaced by an AI chatbot led them to choose a different vendor than they initially expected.

G22026Vendor

How this can be misread: The finding is self-reported influence, not a controlled causal effect.

83%

of surveyed software buyers said AI chatbots made their purchasing decision faster: 37% said much faster and 46% somewhat faster.

G22026Vendor
64%

of surveyed B2B software buyers encounter AI inaccuracies weekly or more often.

G22026Vendor

How this can be misread: This is specific to the surveyed B2B software-buying population and does not measure every AI answer environment.

02shortlist

AI is changing the shortlist

The first commercial effect is not a click. It is whether a company enters the buyer’s consideration set at all.

33%

of surveyed software buyers purchased from a vendor they had not previously heard of after AI surfaced information about it.

G22026Vendor

How this can be misread: The result is self-reported and applies to G2’s surveyed software buyers.

85%

of surveyed software buyers said they think more highly of a vendor when an AI chatbot mentions it in a recommendation.

G22026Vendor

How this can be misread: This reports perceived influence, not a measured change in purchase probability.

45%

of surveyed B2B software buyers said a citation from a review site is the single most confidence-inspiring signal in an AI answer.

03clickthrough

The answer may end the visit

When an AI summary satisfies the research step, being cited becomes a consideration and reputation outcome as much as a referral-traffic outcome.

8% vs 15%

the share of visits with a traditional search-result click when a Google AI summary appeared versus when one did not.

Pew Research CenterJuly 22, 2025Independent

Basis: 68,879 Google searches by 900 consenting U.S. adults in March 2025

How this can be misread: The study should not be generalized to every country, engine or later interface version.

1%

of visits containing a Google AI summary produced a click on a source cited inside the summary.

Pew Research CenterJuly 22, 2025Independent

Basis: 68,879 Google searches by 900 consenting U.S. adults in March 2025

48%

of tracked commercial queries returned an AI Overview in BrightEdge’s measurement, a 58% relative increase in one year.

BrightEdgeFebruary–March 2026Vendor

How this can be misread: This is not 48% of every Google query worldwide; prevalence varies by dataset, query class, country and window.

04act

The buying journey now has an Act gate

AI-mediated buying moves through define, discover, compare, verify, shortlist and act. The final step is whether a person or agent can complete the commercial next step.

393%

year-over-year growth in U.S. retail visits referred by generative AI in the first quarter of 2026.

Adobe Digital InsightsApril 16, 2026Platform

Basis: More than one trillion U.S. retail visits

How this can be misread: The growth begins from a small base and is not equivalent to growth in Google organic traffic.

+42%

higher conversion for AI-referred retail visits than non-AI traffic in March 2026, reversing from 38% worse one year earlier.

Adobe Digital InsightsApril 16, 2026Platform

Basis: More than one trillion U.S. retail visits

How this can be misread: The comparison group includes multiple non-AI channels.

84%

of analyzed AI citations came from earned media broadly defined, including journalism, academic, government, NGO, encyclopedic, social and third-party corporate sources.

Muck Rack Generative PulseMay 7, 2026Vendor

Basis: More than 25 million cited links across ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini in 17 industries

How this can be misread: Muck Rack sells AI-visibility software, and its broad earned-media definition is not synonymous with journalism.

05Sources

Every source, and how independent it is.

Research in this category is published largely by companies selling into it. That does not make it wrong, and on several questions it is the only data that exists — but a reader deserves to know which findings come from a disinterested party and which come from a firm with a product to sell. Each figure above carries its tier. Here is what the three tiers mean.

Independent research

1 source

Survey organizations, newsrooms, infrastructure operators and academic bodies with no product to sell in this category.

Pew Research Center

Platform disclosure

1 source

Figures published by the companies operating the engines or measuring the traffic. Authoritative on their own systems, and self-interested about the size of them.

Adobe Digital Insights

Vendor research

3 sources

Studies published by firms that sell software or services in the search and answer-optimization market. Frequently the only data that exists on a question, and worth reading with the seller's interest in view.

Figures are third-party published research, dated as reported by each source and cited so they can be checked. They are not AIGNCI measurements. Figures from different studies are not combined as if they measured the same thing. Every finding states its scope, source class, commercial interest and material boundary where disclosed.

07Response

What the numbers ask of a company.

Three findings on this page point the same direction. Citations come overwhelmingly from earned and third-party sources, ranking no longer predicts being cited, and almost nobody is measuring the difference. That is a sequence of problems, not a single one, and it is the reason we work in the order we do.

Gate 01 · Reach

Can the machine get the page at all?

Bot rules, CDN policy, redirect chains and pages that only assemble inside a browser decide this before a word of content matters. When it fails, you are not in the answer at any price and nothing reports it.

Gate 02 · Read

Can it find the answer inside?

Prices, locations, hours and capabilities have to be in the served HTML, labeled, current, and not contradicted by your own other pages. When it fails, the engine takes the fact from whoever published it plainly.

Gate 03 · Cite

Will it name you?

Settled largely off your website — one consistent entity across every property you own, and third parties describing you accurately where the engines read. The 84 percent earned-media figure above is this gate stated as data.

08Questions

About this brief

How often is The Shift updated?

Monthly. The current edition is September 2026 and the next is due October 2026. Each edition is published at its own dated URL and the current one is always served at https://www.aignci.com/the-shift, so a citation to that address stays valid as editions change.

Are these AIGNCI's own measurements?

No, and the distinction matters. Every figure here is third-party published research, attributed to its publisher and dated as that publisher reported it. AIGNCI does conduct first-party measurement inside client engagements, but none of it appears in this brief. A market brief that mixed a vendor's own numbers into third-party research would not be checkable.

May I cite The Shift?

Yes, and no permission is needed. Cite the canonical URL https://www.aignci.com/the-shift for the current edition, or the dated edition URL if you are citing a specific figure that may change. Where a figure originates with another publisher — which is all of them — cite that publisher as the source and The Shift as where you found it.

Why do some figures carry a warning about how they can be misread?

Because several of the most quoted numbers in this category are routinely misquoted. A 58 percent rise in the share of searches returning an AI Overview is not 58 percentage points. A 393 percent growth rate starts from a very small base. Stating how a figure can be misread is more useful than presenting it without qualification and hoping it is read carefully.

Why are sources labeled independent, platform or vendor?

Because a Pew Research Center survey and a study by a company selling search software are both usable and are not the same kind of evidence. The label describes the publisher's independence from this market, not the quality of the work. On several questions, vendor research is the only data that exists, and it is included and marked rather than excluded or disguised.

What happens to figures that turn out to be wrong?

They are corrected on the page, with the previous reading, the new reading and the reason all preserved. The August 2026 edition widened the citation-overlap finding printed in July and re-sourced it from one vendor study to three separate bodies. The July edition remains online exactly as published so the change can be checked rather than taken on trust.
